Maria has been working with emerging growth companies since 2000. Prior to joining Beedie Capital Partners, Maria spent eleven years with GrowthWorks Capital Ltd., one of Canada's largest venture capital firms. In her role there, she managed technology investments and served on the Boards of a number of portfolio companies.
Prior to joining GrowthWorks Capital, Maria worked at a digital media firm assisting the company in operational activities and strategic initiatives. Maria also worked for Deutsche Bank Securities in mergers and acquisitions across a variety of industries including financial services and technology.
Maria has an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Simon Fraser University and holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. Maria is a member of the CFA Institute and is on the Board of Directors for CFA Vancouver.
Brad Palmer: Brad is the co-founder and CEO of Jostle Corporation, creator of the People Engagement® platform that helps organizations around the globe enable their employees and drive their culture, in simple and engaging ways.
Brad has more than 30 years of experience leading multidisciplinary teams and driving the commercialization of technology businesses. Most recently he provided overall leadership to OMNEX Controls where he improved strategy, process and leadership to quickly transform the company, thereby creating considerable value. Prior to OMNEX, Brad led Kodak’s ink-jet proofing and colour management businesses, where he successfully consolidated 15 teams from three companies into a unified worldwide operation. At Creo Inc. he served as a Corporate VP and led the inkjet printing and on-press imaging divisions, both of which introduced highly innovative products. Earlier, he founded ThermicEdge Corporation and built it into a public company that custom manufactured high-performance components for the electronics industry.
Brad holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Physics from SFU.
Tanner Philp is an Investment Counsellor at RBC PH&N Investment Counsel where he is responsible for managing private client discretionary portfolios for high net worth individuals, their families and their companies. Tanner is a Chartered Accountant (CA), a Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) and has a Bachelor of Business Administration (Finance) degree. Tanner works closely with tax, legal, insurance and estate planning advisors to deliver an integrated wealth management solution that meets his clients' needs.
Tanner has previously been an entrepreneur and an executive in the venture capital and private equity industry. He is a professional development instructor on wealth management and business succession for the BC Institute of Chartered Accountants, and a contributor to Beyond Numbers. Tanner was awarded the 2007 Early Achievement Award from the BC Institute of Chartered Accountants and received Honor Roll Standing on his CA qualification exams (Top 10 in BC).
Danny is currently the CEO of Perch.co, an internet company working to bring families closer together using video communications in a new way.
Prior to Perch, he was CEO of BCIC, a crown corporation dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship and innovation in the province of British Columbia. Danny was also a Co-founder of Bootup Labs, the first seed accelerator in Vancouver, and invested in 8 companies. So far, two Bootup Labs companies have been acquired, including one by Twitter. He was also co-founder of the Bootup Entrepreneurial Society which promoted BC's Internet technology industry and threw some pretty darn good tech parties in the process, including the popular Launch Party @ Grow.
Danny sits on the board of Suite101, is Co-Founder/CEO of OpsKwan, a SaaS based medical software platform for tracking orthopaedics assets, and is also Co-founder/Chairman of Strutta, a social promotions platform, was Founder/CEO Peerflix, a marketplace to trade your DVDs, and was Co-Founder/CEO Spinway, an advertising supported ISP.
As Telefilm Canada’s first National New Media Sector Head, Earl led the development of the New Media Unit’s business and investment practices. He was also Telefilm Canada’s Western Region Director from 2002 to 2010, where he led the agency’s Film, TV and New Media financing operations, business development, and public relations activities in the West.
In the early part of his career, Earl started out in the ‘traditional’ fields of Chartered Accountancy and Corporate Finance. During these first 10+ years, he helped companies with their financing strategies, from private stage through to going public. Currently, he is a co-founder of Kibooco Interactive Inc. (www.kibooco.com), a Vancouver-based start-up digital media company that is developing an online platform for kids to create their own stories and designs, which they can turn into “real world” personalized keepsakes such as books, custom notebooks, t-shirts, calendars, greeting cards.
Gary has over 30 years of senior executive experience in the technology industry. He has been an active angel investor and board director with several successful exits.
He is currently the founder and Managing Partner of Espresso Capital, a venture debt fund based in Vancouver. Previously he was Vice President, Sales and Corporate Development of Brightside Technologies, which was purchased by Dolby Labs in 2007. Gary also served as the Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Service for Creo Products, helping to grow the company from $6M to over $125M in revenue over a three-year period prior to being purchased by Kodak for $1B in 2005. He also served as COO of Resolution Health in San Jose, which was purchased by Wellpoint in 2008. Prior to that he was the manager for Eastern Canada for Digital Equipment Corp.
He is a BCIT graduate in Electronics and has a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and Genetics from the University of British Columbia. Mr. Yurkovich is currently the Managing Partner of Espresso Capital, Board Director at Clevest Solutions, Lead Board Director of Wolf Medical, and past director on the Board of Directors at BC Social Venture Partners, a provider of capital and business expertise to non-profit organizations.
